Paper Minecraft
Paper Minecraft Overview
The popular creator Grypatch used Scratch to create Paper Minecraft, a fan-made 2D version of the game. It adopts the well-known building and survival features of Minecraft and turns them into a side-scrolling game. The result is both nostalgic and novel: everything takes place on a flat plane, but you still gather resources, construct shelters, and repel mobs. It is quicker, lighter, and plays right in your browser without requiring any downloads.
How to Play Paper Minecraft
Both desktop and mobile devices can play Paper Minecraft, but a keyboard is the most effective way to play the game.
- Desktop: Use the mouse to mine, place blocks, and navigate menus; move with the arrow keys or WASD; and jump with the spacebar. Simple, user-friendly menus are used to manage inventory and crafting.
- Mobile: On touchscreen devices, controls are mapped to an on-screen interface. It takes some getting used to, but once you understand the fundamentals, building and exploring anywhere is simple.
When creating a new world, you can select between Creative Mode and Survival Mode. While Creative gives you everything up front so you can experiment freely, Survival is about resource management and defense.
Features of the Game
- A complete 2D sandbox experience that includes building, crafting, and mining
- There are two primary modes: Creative (unrestricted freedom) and Survival (with health, hunger, and mobs).
- Grid-based inventory management system
- Traditional crafting techniques modified for a side-scrolling layout
- Easy-to-use controls that function on all devices and browsers
Tips for New Players
- In Survival, collect wood right away—it’s the foundation for tools and shelter.
- Don’t ignore food. Hunger drops faster than you think, and keeping cooked meat or bread in your inventory can save you.
- Underground caves are risky but rewarding—bring torches before diving in.
- Use Creative Mode if you just want to practice controls or test building ideas.
